It is illegal to use primates in product testing research; however, primates are used in biomedical and behavioral research. Can you describe any interesting research which utilizes non-human primates as subjects? Did you find this information on the web, in a journal article, through personal experience, etc.?
Development of pollio vaccine:
Animal models are essential for experimental purposes utilized for the welfare of humans. The non human primates are used as such animal models for medical experiments due to their similarities with human beings. These animal models can be utilized to understand about the disease, their prevention and treatment. One such experiment involving non human primates as models was the development of polio vaccines in which Jonas Salk isolated 3 forms of polio virus using the cross- contamination studies of rhesus monkey. The monkey's kidney cell culture were also used to create vaccine against the strains of polio virus. And for the clinical trial of this vaccine the non human primates were again used before clinical trials on humans.
