Lab 12: Transcription and Translation

Pre-Lab Questions

1.     What is a gene? Describe the function, structure, and location within the cell.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Genes are small segments of DNA which carries a important information that codes for protein.
Structure
Human genes cotains both exon and intron in alternate forms. Genes are small in size. It contains GC Box, CAAT Box, and TATA box has a promoter region to initiate the transcription. The UTR region present before the exon1. The enhancer is present 1000 bp upstream from the start site of gene.

Function
Transcripion which makes mRNA from the template region of DNA where gene is present. From that translation occurs which form protein from mRNA by ribosomes.

Genes located in nucleus of DNA.
