Describe two examples of how humans have influenced natural selection in species.

Describe two examples of how humans have influenced natural selection in species.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Human has influenced natural selection by ‘selective breeding’ to make the physical appearance and behaviour of different organisms such as dogs, cabbage and pigeons. According to Darwin one of the most important features is the domestication of species for our own interest.

Pigeons, dogs, and cabbage are selectively breeded from common ancestor species Columba Livia(rock dove), dogs from Canis lupus ( wolf.), and cabbage from wild cabbage respectively.

This week we have examined the three modes of Natural Selection: directional selection, stabilizing selection, and disruptive selection. Conduct an internet search for an example of one of these modes of natural selection, describe and share it with the rest of the class. You only have to choose one of the three mechanisms, but you can certainly share more if you would like to. Examples: The long average length of Giraffe necks represents directional selection. Average birth weight in humans...

What problems arise when a species is introduced from a foreign ecosystem? How do these problems occur? Give four categories of consumers in an ecosystem and the role that each plays. Compare “instrumental” and “intrinsic” value as they relate to determining the worth of natural species. How does Leopold’s idea of the land ethic fit into these two categories? What is the “tragedy of the commons”? Give an example of a common-pool resource, and describe ways of protecting such resources....
