Explain briefly why receptor-mediated endocytosis is more selective when compared to other types of bulk transport?
Bulk transport is needed for transport of large particles across the cell membrane by enclosing the substances to be transported that can bud off or to fuse with in order to transport the substance. It comprises of endocytosis, phagocytosis, pinocytosis and receptor mediated endocytosis.
Endocytosis - General term for various kinds of transports that are active and involve enclosed vesicles made of palsm membrane.
Phagocytosis - cell eating. Transport of solid molecules/cells.
Pinocytosis - cell drinking. Bulk fluid transport.
Receptor mediated endocytosis - employs receptors in the plasma membrane that can bind to omly specific molecule and transport them In plasmamembrane where these receptors cluster together called as coated pits.
It is more selective because of the receptor it involves.
