Explain how species interactions (facillitation, tolerance or inhibition) can affect succession

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Facilitation model
It is a process where one or more species alter the environment make more suitable for one or more species to enter in large number. Eg. Nitrogen fixation by bacteria makes plant grown in that region.

Inhibition model

It is a process where one or more species alter the environment makes negative effect for other species prevent it growth. Eg, Soil-borne pathogens associated with particular plant that compete out
earlier in succession.

Tolerance model
It is a process where one or more species alter the environment but it not have any effect on some species. Eg. floral succession (secondary), in which all spp present as seed bank in soil.

ECOLOGY QUESTION: Following a volcanic eruption, an ecologist observes that species composition is dominated by species A for 10 years, but after that point species B is more common. Northwestern Alaska is home to a variety of species. Some of these species and their interactions with one another are described here. Beavers (Castor canadensis, pictured on the left) eat willow shrubs; they also use willow as a source of material for building dams. Damming of waterways causes water to pool, which creates habitats that salmon use as spawning locations. Moose eat the same willow shrubs that beavers use to build their dams. The ptarmigan (pictured on the right) is...
