Citalopram is one of the medicine used to treat anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorder occurs due to low level of serotonin in brain.

This is also known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor(SSRI). It helps to restore natural serotonin (neurotransmitter) in brain which carries signals between brain cells which is low in anxiety disorder patient. So, signals does not coordinate between brain cells in individual having anxiety disorder. This medicine prevents reuptake of serotonin and thus increases the level of serotonin in brain. This is known as selective because it only effects serotonin and not other neurotransmitter.
