mRNA is formed using non coding DNA strand as a template. This is also called as template DNA strand. The given strand of DNA is a template DNA. It is in 3' to 5' direction. The messenger RNA is complementary to template DNA and is in opposite direction.

The process which leads to the formation of messenger RNA using DNA as a template is transcription. The process used is DNA dependent RNA polymerase enzyme. It takes place in nucleus of eukaryotes and in cytoplasm of prokaryotes.
