Compare and contrast the Bcl2 family proteins.

Compare and contrast the Bcl2 family proteins.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The bcl2 family proteins are those proteins that can pevents apoptosis as they prevents functioning of apoptoptic proteins or they can also promote apoptopsis by helping in release of cytochrome c from mitochondrial membrane. They have a BCL2 domain or homology domain which are BH1 ,BH2 ,BH3 and BH4.

On basis of these domains the bcl2 family proteins can be divided in to two as BH domain is essential for normal functioning. Which are those which have several BH domain eg Bax and others have only one BH3 domain which is BAD and these play main role in causing apoptosis.

Hence the BH3 domain is the domain present in all types of Bcl2 family protein as this domain is necessary for diamerizsation and other important functions.

A hypothetical family of proteins consists of six similar but different proteins. Each of the six proteins can form transcription factors by forming homo- or heterodimers in combinatorial mixtures, each binding to different regulatory sites. Calculate the number of different dimeric structures that can be formed from the six proteins (and, thus potential number of different regulatory sites that can be bound). Show the calculation.
