The acid in the stomach kills different bacteria. Are all bacteria killed in the stomach? Explain
The acidity of the stomach is very low(1.5 - 1.8) ie. Stomach secretes HCL via the parietal cells or the oxyntic cells.
Such a low pH is sufficient to kell the microbes most especially most of the bacterial species. But despite of this there are certain bacteria that can survive in this acidity also because they produce certain enzyme which are resistant to acidic environment. Eg. H. pylori which causes the peptic ulcers produces the enzyme urease which is able to hydtolyze the urea into CO2 and ammonia. Ammonia being a proton acceptor provide defence to the bacterium.
