What are the dietary changes that people must make after removing their gallbladder?
After surgery, our liver still makes enough bile but we may have difficulty in processing fatty foods. For the first few days after surgery, we have to stick with clear liquids, broths and gelatin. Then, we can gradually add more solid foods back into our diet. For the first few days after surgery, we have to stick to a low-fat diet. We have to avoid fried foods, high-fat foods, foods with strong odors and gas-causing foods. In addition, we should avoid spicy food including French fries and potato chips, high fat meat, high fat dairy, creamy soup and sauces, chicken or turkey skin and pizza. After that, we can consider adding the gas-producing foods including whole-grain bread, nuts, legumes, seeds, broccoli, and cabbage back into our diet slowly.
