The genetic variation in microorganisms may occur due to various mechanisms

1. exposure to UV

2. exposure to gama radiation

3. exposure to mutagenic chemicals

4. presence of virus in cell.

5. presence or transfer of plasmid DNA

6. due to conjugation of cells with different genetic properties.

The plasmid is extra chromosomal genetic material, which is found in a bacterial cell. it may have gene that can change the overall genetics of any bacterial cell. for example it may change the resistance capacity of the cell. when a plasmid containing ampicillin or tetracycline resistance gene is transferred into the bacterial cel, it will become resistant against the ampicillin or tetracycline antibiotic
