Part A

Assuming that glucose is metabolized to CO2 as an energy source, how many amino acid residues can be incorporated into a protein molecule for each glucose consumed by a cell?

Part B

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Metabolism of Gluucose -

Glucose absorbed in the body is taken is converted into pyruvate through the process of glycolysis . In this process , 6 ATP is generated .

Then the pyruvate is converted to the AcetylCoA , in which another 6 ATP is generated.

Then the Acetyl CoA goes into krebs cycle , which yields 24 ATPs .

So , a total of ATP of 36 ATP is formed by the metabolism of glucose .

Now for adding an amonio acid into a protein , total 5 ATP is used up -

  • 2 for the activation of the amino acid.
  • 2 for the peptide bond formation
  • 1 for corrections .

So 36 ATPs will add 36/5 = 7 amino acids addition to the protein.
