Krakatau, in the early 1900s, eventually showed a climax community of 200 insects, approximately 400 species of plants, 2 species of lizards and 5 species of flying birds. Since this time it has been showing a decline of organismal diversity. Why?
The major reason for the heavy loss in organismal diversity over the years after 1900 is the destruction of natural habitats of these organisms. With the advances in medical sciences , life expectancy has increased and hence the human population has exploded. Forests are cut down in order to build more houses and roads/ or lay tracks for trains as vehicular traffic is increasing exponentially. Also increased waste production (especially plastic waste) and it's improper disposal( for eg. dumping in water bodies) leads to their choking. Global warming too is adversely affecting the living beings and exhausting the rivers and other water bodies which inhabit million of creatures.
