In many fungus the process of sexual reproduction uses plasmogamy followed by karyogamy. Animals (the kingdom closest to fungi) does not have separate plasmogamy and karyogamy. Which do you think evolved first? The process used by fungus or the fertilization process used by animals? Provide and logical reason for your answer
Ans :
The process used by fungus evolved first. Plasmogamy evolved first and hence fungi evolved earlier than animals.
Reason : Plasmogamy is a stage in the sexual reproduction of fungi, in which the cytoplasm of two parent cells fuses together without the fusion of nuclei bringing two haploid nuclei close together in the same cell. Karyogamy is the final step in the process of fusing the two haploid nuclei together. In order for karyogamy to occur, the cell membrane and cytoplasm of each cell must fuse with the other in a process known as plasmogamy. Hence the process used by fungus evolves first than the process used by animals. Animals are considered to be the descendants of fungus.
