True or False- Protozoan cysts are resistant to many disinfection methods.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Protozoans form cysts, a group of cells with thick membrane in order to protect themselves from the harsh environmental conditions. Cysts are not reproductive features, but only meant for protection of organisms. Protozoa require living organisms to complete their life cycle and exist as non-living cysts encrypt into thick walls outside their hosts.

Common disinfectants like adding chlorine to drinking water does not penetrate the walls of cysts. Even the particulate matter attached to the cysts shields them from many disinfection methods.
