You are investigating the effect of changes in the region of a bacterial mRNA that was upstream of the Aug on the translation of the protein. You changed the sequence from uaa gga ggu ugu aug to auu ccu ucc acu aug where the aug initiati/start coding is the bold. What effect did this change have on the translation of the protein?

Translation of the protein will not occur.Translation will not be initiated.

The translation initiation in prokaryotes requires the Shine Dalgarno sequence AGGAGGU which is centered about 3-10 nucleotides upstream of the start codon AUG. The Shine-Dalgarno sequence is complementary to a region at the 3' end of the 16S rRNA, the one present in the small subunit of a ribosome.The given sequence UAA GGA GGU UGU AUG has both the Shine-Dalgarno sequence and the initiation codon AUG which are shown in bold. When the sequence is mutated to AUU CCU UCC ACU AUG, the Shine-Dalgarno sequence is lost. Thus the 16S rRNA will not be able to bind the mRNA and the translation of the protein will not be initiated.
