Facultative anaerobes are the organisms that can produce enenrgy using oxygen when it is present , but when there is absence of oxygen they switch to anaerobic mode.

Examples -

Gram negative- E. coli, Salmonella

Gram positive- Corynebacterium , Listeria

the common sites for these organisms are the air free pockets such as gums of teeth,gastrointestinal tract.

he advantage of hese organisms is that they can survive both the aerobic as well as anaerobic conditions, hence has the higher survival rate as compared to the obligate aerobes or the obligate anaerobes.
