Root systems are mainly of two types viz tap root and fibrous root. Dicots have a tap root system, while monocots have a fibrous root system.

A tap root system type has a deep root going down vertically from which lateral roots arise. This type of root penetrates deep down into the soil. eg dandelions

Monocots generally have fibrous root system and hence they have no main roots. They form a tuft of roots closer to the surface of soil and helps in prevention of soil erosion. eg lawn grasses and onion.
