The most recent FDA-approved HPV vaccine (Gardasil-9) increases the coverage of the vaccine by 15-20% (the 9 in Gardasil-9 refers to the number of HPV types that the vaccine guards against) and provides protection against up to 90% of cervical cancers. Why do you think 10% of cervical cancers are still not covered?
Question
The 10 percent of cervical cancer are still not covered with FDA approved vaccine known as Gardasil-9 because it is used in the prevention of only some strains of HPV(human papiloma virus) virus that causes cervical cancer. The gardisal inhibit HPV strains that are sexually transmitted like HPV-6, 11,16 and 18. But there are some strains of HPV virus that do not get transmitted by sexual contact and therefore could not be treated with Gardasil vaccine.
