As defined , Variation is a difference in the phenotype of the organism. As the phenotype change may be due to genetic mutation or either by environmental factor. Here variation may be beneficial or harmful or even neutral. But as per survial of the fittest laid down by the darwin, the species eliminate the harmful traits to evolve in the environment. Also here neutral variation increases the genetic variation, allowing a population to carry more alleles that may help it respond to environmental change. Thus neutral variation is said to be important.
