In apples, red skin colour ‘R’ is dominant to yellowish-green skin colour ‘r’, and stems with no leaves ‘S’ are dominant over stems with leaves ‘s’. The mating of two apple varieties yielded the following progeny: 380 no leaf stem, red apples; 371 no leaf stem, yellow apples; 131 leaf stem, red apples; and 100 leaf stem, yellow apples. What were the genotypes of the parents in this cross?

Answer #1

Here phenotypic ratio of progeny is 380: 371: 131: 100 = 3.8: 3.7: 1.3: 1. This phenotypic ratio is very closer to 3: 3: 1: 1. This 3: 3: 1: 1 phenotypic ratio in the progeny suggests two genes, one heterozygous in each parent and one heterozygous in one parent and homozygous recessive in the other. Therefore the genotypic ratio of parents will be either RrSs X Rrss or RrSs X rrSs. But first one does not satisfy the obtained phenotypic ratio. Thus, the answer will be RrSs X rrSs.

In an ornamental plant, silver-colored flowers (s) are recessive to blue-colored flowers (S), red leaves (r) are recessive to green leaves (R), and long stems (l) are recessive to short stems (L). All three genes involved are located on the same chromosome. Two true-breeding strains were crossed to produce an F1 plant. Then, this F1 plant was test-crossed to a plant with silver flowers, red leaves, and long stems, to produce the following progeny: progeny phenotype count of progeny silver...

Tallness (T ) in snapdragons is dominant to dwarfism (t ), while red (R ) flower color is incompletely dominant to white (R' ). The heterozygous condition results in pink (RR' ) flower color. The genes for these traits occur on separate chromosomes. A dwarf, red snapdragon is crossed with a plant homozygous for tallness and white fowers. a) Determine the genotypes of the parents. b) Determine all the types of gametes each parent can produce. c) Complete the Punnett...
