Down syndrome is chromosomal abnormality. it is trisomy 21 means that there is three copies of chromosome number 21 in all cells of body.

This down syndrome is caused when there is nondisjunction occurs during the cell division.

in the sketch it is shown that nondisjunction occurs at maternal meiosis I , out of four chromosomes three chromosomes enter into the one daughter cell and only one chromosome goes into the other daughter cell.

therefore there is instead of 2 , the three chromosomes are present in daughter cell , causes down syndrome.
