A couple is heterozygous for two genes, cystic fibrosis (CF) and albinism, what is the probability of their first child having either CF or albinism?

Albinism and cystic fibrosis are two independent diseases.

Parents are heterozygous (carriers) for CF and for Alb

CF = normal, cf = cystic fibrosis, A = normal (no albinism) and a = albinism

Cystic fibrosis:

Parents   Cf cf x Cf cf

In F1 generation - 1/4 Cf Cf : 1/2 Cf cf : 1/4 cfcf   

Phenotype - 3/4 normal : 1/4 CF disorder

Albinism:

Parents Aa x Aa

In F1 generation - 1/4 AA : 1/2 Aa : 1/4 aa

Phenotype - 3/4 normal : 1/4 albinism disorder

When combining CF or albinism then the probability of one or the other is the addition of the separate probabilities 1/4 for CF + 1/4 for Albinism = 1/2.
