  1. Give an example of an organism that can survive best in the following conditions:

    1. acidic

    2. basic

    3. neutral pH

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Acidic:-The organisms that can survive best inower PH are known as acidophiles .They can survive in PH lower than 3.These microorganisms commonly found in volcanic and mining areas.Thiobacilus acidophilus (bacteria),vorticella(a type of eukaryote) are good examples of acidiphiles.picrophilus oshimae needs optimum PH 1 for optimum growth.

Basic:-Obligate alkaliphiles can survive best in high PH.Natronobacterium gregoryi can grow in PH 10.most of the alkaliphiles possess bacillus morphology.

Neutrals:-The organisms can survive in PH range (5.5-8) and known as neutrophiles. They are commonly found in soil and water.Escherichia coli is the best example of neutrophiles which can grow in PH 7.

Soluble salts containing the ammonium ion (NH4+) can give acidic, neutral or basic solutions when dissolved in water. For any given salt that contains ammonium ion, describe how you would predict whether an aqueous solution of that salt would be acidic, neutral or basic. Note: Kb for the weak base, NH3, is 1.8E-5.

Most reactions that can be done under acidic conditions can also be done under basic conditions – for example, conversion of a ketone into a ketal. That said, the reason Fischer esterifications require acid catalysis is that protonating the acid makes the electrophile (the carbonyl carbon) a better electrophile. We could presumably make the nucleophile (an alcohol) a better nucleophile, which is usually done through deprotonation. Explain why reacting an alkoxide with a carboxylic acid will not result in a...
