5. What is residence time? How is residence time linked to ocean salinity? Which instrument can be used to measure salinity of coastal water [1+4+1=6 marks]

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The residence time of any given entity is the amount of time a particular molecule of the entity remains in the reservoir of stady state over a given time period.

Salinity is the concentration of dissolved salts in sea water. Residence time of sodium chloride in the ocean is the average time a sodium atom spends in the ocean, which is same as the time it takes to replace all the sodium in the ocean. Hence, the relation between ocean salinity and residence time can be determined by the following ways- 1) Determine the amount of sodium in the ocean. 2) Determine the sodium flux via rivers.

The conductivity, temperature and depth CTD profiler is used to measure ocean salinity.

A medical technology instrument called the "Osmette S" uses the freezing point depression technique to measure the molality of aqueous solutions. It can be used to measure the molecular weight of water-soluble polymers. The minimum molality that the instrument can measure is 1 mmol/kg. Suppose you make up a polymer of concentration 25 mg/ml. What is the maximum polymer molecular weight that can be measured with this instrument?

Vocean= volume of ocean Docean  = volume of ocean A) The total volume of Titan’s lakes and seas was recently estimated to be 70,000 km3 of liquid methane. If this volume was spread across all of Titan into a global ocean (ignore any surface topography for the remainder of this question), how deep would that global ocean be? The volume of a global ocean can be approximated by its depth multiple by the surface area of the moon (Vocean = Docean...

You have exposed some algae to a high-salinity environment and used high-throughput sequencing to measure gene expression levels. You have a list of 50 genes that are known to be involved in helping cells respond to high salinity and want to know whether more of those genes show a change in their expression (i.e., are either up-regulated or down-regulated). To do so, you can compare the observed number of up-regulated genes from that list to the number that might be...
