Answer #1

Higher cortisol levels.

Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone, its secretion increased in stres, low glucose level in blood and in aged people. Cortisol hormone takes part in gluconeogenesis, and decrease the transport of glucose through transporters causing insulin resistance. Glycogenesis also enhanced by cortisol. These all promote accumulation of glucose and leading to tpe 2 diabetes. Due to this reason older individuals ‘show vulnerability to diabetes and insulin resistance with age.

Summarize this passge The etiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus involves the induction of insulin resistance along with the disruption of pancreatic β-cell function and the loss of β-cell mass. In addition to a genetic predisposition, lifestyle factors seem to have an important role. Epidemiological studies indicate that the increased presence of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the environment may also play an important part in the incidence of metabolic diseases. Widespread EDCs, such as dioxins, pesticides and bisphenol A,...

Summarize this passage. Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a widespread endocrine disruptor that produces insulin resistance and alterations in pancreatic β-cell function [1]. It has been suggested that together with other endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), BPA constitutes a risk factor for type 2 diabetes and other metabolic disorders [2]–[4]. Recent work shows the association between increasing urinary BPA levels and Diabetes Mellitus. A 12.8% of diabetic patients show high BPA levels in urine samples (4.20 ng/ml or 18 nM) [5]. Moreover an...

Type 2 diabetes is a major health problem world-wide, and may be caused by obesity in many individuals. Type 2 diabetics produce plenty of insulin, but the muscle and fat cells are not responsive to the insulin (i.e. insulin cannot get glucose to enter the cells). TZD is a drug that is used for treating Type 2 diabetes. TZD increases the action of insulin and will lower blood glucose to normal levels by helping insulin to “push” glucose into either...

Case Analysis - Wentworth Medical Center As part of a long-term study of individuals 65 years of age or older, sociologists and physicians at the Wentworth Medical Center in upstate New York investigated the relationship between geographic location and depression. A sample of 60 individuals, all in reasonably good health, was selected; 20 individuals were residents of Florida, 20 were residents of New York, and 20 were residents of North Carolina. Each of the individuals sampled was given a standardized...

1. Suppose that population aging in a given country is due entirely to an increase in life expectancy at age 65, rather than any other cause, and suppose further that Zweifel et al. (1999) are right and the rise in the set of people who are close to death causes higher health care expenditures. Given these assumptions, would you expect per capita health care expenditures to rise or fall in the near future? What about total health expenditures? 2. Suppose...
