Glycosylation, or the addition of sugar molecules, is a post-translational modification of proteins that occurs in the ER lumen. Nearly half of all proteins are glycosylated. Answer the following questions regarding protein glycosylation.

A.) Are glycosylated proteins found in the mitochondria? Why or why not?

B.) Please explain why integral membrane proteins are only found to be glycosylated on thr extracellular surface of the protein.

Answer-1 yes the glycosylated protein are found in mitochondria. Most of proteins are glycosylated. Example- ATP synthase.

Answer-2 The integral membrane proteins are permanently attached to the membrane. These acts as transporter or signaling proteins. Other extracellular proteins are transferred by these proteins. The molecular size and conformation will change in extracellular proteins if they are glycosylated and this will affect their functioning so only integral membrane proteins are found to be glycosylated.
