During DNA replication, the lagging strand is produced by linking together many Okazaki fragments. Please describe the enzymes and processes involved in producing 2 Okazaki fragments and linking them together into a single small strand of DNA.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Okazaki fragments are synthesized by DNA polymerase enzyme, DNA polymerase III synthesize DNA in the 5` to 3` direction, so DNA synthesis in the template strand having polarity 5` to 3` is discontinuous, DNA is synthesized as fragments called Okazaki fragments, synthesis of each Okazaki fragment requires RNA primer, which is generated by primase, RNA primer is removed by DNA polymerase I and the gap is filled with DNA, then these Okazaki fragments are linked to each other via DNA ligase.

so enzymes required are RNA primase, DNA polymerase III, DNA polymerase I, DNA ligase.
