Meiosis occurs in many organisms as part of sexual reproduction. Discuss TWO examples of meiotic errors and their effects on offspring.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Meiosis is a reductional division which gives rise to haploid gametes from the dioloid parents. The two meiotic errors are:

*Non disjunction: The chromosome don't segregate properly in this case during anaphase. This leads to produce abnormal gametes having chromosome count more of or less than normal gametes.

* Translocation: During the meiosis, there is found transfer of one chromosomal segment to the another. This gives rise to deletion of this segment from this chromosome. And it is attached at another chromosome. This gives abnormal chromosome bearing gametes.

Sexual reproduction increases genetic variability in organisms. One mechanism used during sexual reproduction to increase variability in offspring is crossing over. Which one of the following statements best describes the process of crossing over? Select one: a. The fertilization of the zygote b. The passage of the sperm thru the egg cell wall c. The exchange of homologous regions between maternal and paternal chromosomes d. The random alignment of homologous chromosomes during metaphase

This is an advantage of sexual reproduction. Creates twice as many gametes as asexual reproduction Produces new combinations of genes/traits in offspring, increasing diversity. Produces numerous genetically identical offspring Only requires a single parent, saving time and resources.
