In cats, the gene for fur color is X-linked and there are 2 alleles, orange and black. The tortoiseshell pattern of black and orange patches is created due to X-inactivation in a heterozygote. A litter of kittens is born with 2 tortoiseshell females and 2 orange males. Of the choices below, which could be the phenotypes of their parents?

the correct answer is C , please show work and explain thank you.

a)

The mother is orange and the father is tortoiseshell.

b)

Both the mother and father are black.

c)

The mother is orange and the father is black.

d)

The mother is black and the father is orange.

Answer #1

ANSWER is c) because in cat the dominate O allele of the X linded orange gene required to produce orange fur,and recessive o allele of this gene produce black fur.

so that the heterozygous Oo female cat have a tortoiseshell coat then in some patches of cell the chromosome with the O allele inactivated so the coat is black which determine o allele.in other patches of the cell the chromosome with the o allele inactivated so fur is orange since the O allele is active .

(orange female xblack male)OOXoY=Oo,OY,Oo,OY

In cats, assume that one gene controls the color of pigment produced during fur growth, and comes in black and orange alleles. Separately, another gene controls whether any pigment produced is actually deposited in a growing hair or not. Thus, any cat homozygous for the recessive allele of the pigment deposition gene will have white fur, regardless of which combination of black or orange alleles they have for the other gene. What kind of inheritance is this an example of?...

. You are studying cats and coat colour. You have pure-breeding black female cats with normal toes and you cross them to pure-breeding orange male cats with extra toes. You get F1 progeny that all have extra toes. The males are all black and the females are all tortoiseshell (with black and orange patches of fur). A. (4 points) Explain the F1 phenotypes by assigning symbols to the genes and alleles in question, showing the parental and F1 genotypes. Use...

1. Wool color in sheep is under the control of an autosomal gene which segregates two alleles: B,confers white wool, while the recessive allele b specifies black wool. A population of sheep under Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was observed: Of 325 individuals, 194 have white wool and 131 have black wool. . What is the frequency of the B allele? b.
