Define brood parasitism. Which of these groups of birds would be most susceptible to brood parasitism and why: 1) those birds that nest in Oklahoma versus those that nest in Costa Rica, Central America, and 2) birds that are solitary nesters or birds that nest in colonies? Discuss how a host bird might make the decision to either abandon or continue to incubate eggs in a parasitized nest with respect to the following: 1) nest cavity availability for a bird that nests in cavities, 2) whether it is early or late in nesting season, and 3) whether the bird nests in a temperate or tropical climate zone. List and briefly discuss five behaviors and/or traits of the brood parasite bird that helps increase its success of parasitizing the host bird.

ANSWER:-

  • Brood parasitism is the phenomenon when birds that don't build nests hatch in other bird's nest.
  • The host bird or the other bird hatches and nurtures the parasite bid's chick as well along with its chicks. The parasite bird actually destroys one or more eggs of the host bird nest to lay its egg.
  • The host bird evolves to recognise the parasite bird eggs; and similarly, the parasite bird also evolves to lay eggs that are sililar to the host bird.
