DNA polymerase is an enzyme that plays a key role in the replication of DNA. DNA polymerases can add nucleotides complementary to the template strand and that happens in a particular direction i.e to the 3' end of the new DNA strand. So, the dNTPs are one of the pre-requisites. Moreover, a primer of a few nucleotides in length is also required which would be complementary to a part of the template strand. A typical primer length varies from 5-10 nucleotides. Once, the primer is in place, the DNA polymerase can keep adding the dNTPs to the 3' end and keep synthesizing DNA from 5' to 3' end.
