Types of chromosomal rearrangements that alters gene expression: deletions/decrease, duplications, inversions, and translocations.

The total amount of genetic information in the chromosome can change by -

  • Decrease: Deletion of nucleotides
  • Increase: Duplications & Insertions(Addition of nucleotides)

The genetic material may remain the same, but is rearranged -

  • Inversions - Inversion results when a chromosome segment excises and reintegrates oriented 180° from the original orientation. It can be Paracentric inversion where centromere is not involved and pericentric inversion where centromere is involved in the inversion.
  • Translocations - occurs when a segment of one chromosome becomes attached to another. It can be Reciprocal and non reciprocal translocation
