Why is the patient’s whole blood sample centrifuged at the start of the procedure?
Centrifugation is the process by which centrifugal force is used to seperate the components of blood. This works under sedimentation principles.Blood consists of cellular elements dipped in a complex solution called plasma. It helps in seperating the cellular portions and liquid portions of the blood. At the end of centrifugation the red blood cells participate to the bottom, then the platelets, then white bloodcells and on the top plasma. These seperated cells can be collected for other uses.If the whole blood is not centrifuged and seperated ,the cells will interact with serum or the liquid portion which leads in altering the bloods chemical composition and will affect the result.
