Answer #1

Yes, hardening of the arteries is a confounder in the relationship between high cholesterol and risk of heart attacks. Hardening of the arteries is commonly called as atherosclerosis. It occurs when fat, cholesterol, and other substances build up in the walls of arteries. These deposits are collectively called as plaques. Over the time period, these plaques can narrow or they can completely block the arteries that cause severe problems throughout the body. Normally, high blood cholesterol levels can cause hardening of the arteries. These blockages stop the blood and oxygen supply to the tissues. This can result in damage or tissue death. It is the common cause of heart attack and stroke as well.

A person with high blood cholesterol has plaques that partially block several systemic arteries. This buildup can in turn lead to hypertension in the systemic circulation and an increased blood pressure in the aorta. In terms of afterload, explain how this condition can lead to a strain on the heart and decreased stroke volume, especially in the left ventricle.

High levels of cholesterol in the blood are associated with higher risk of heart attacks. Will using a drug to lower blood cholesterol reduce heart attacks? The Helsinki Heart Study looked at this question. Middle-aged men were assigned at random to one of two treatments: 2051 men took the drug gemfibrozil to reduce their blood cholesterol levels, and a control group of 2030 men took a placebo. During the next five years, 65 men in the gemfibrozil group and 84...

Studies have shown that states with higher cigarette taxes have lower rates of teenage smoking. But subsequent studies that excluded the states of North Carolina, Kentucky, and Virginia found no significant relationship between the tax on cigarettes and the incidence of teenage smoking. Can you think of a plausible explanation? Why is there no significant difference in the incidence of teenage smoking between high-tax and low-tax states when North Carolina, Kentucky, and Virginia are excluded from the study? Please explain.

Do you have enough “good cholesterol?” High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is sometimes called the “good cholesterol” because low values are associated with a higher risk of heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, people over the age of 20 years should have at least 40 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl) of HDL cholesterol.40U.S. women aged 20 and over have a mean HDL of 55 mg/dl with a standard deviation of 15.5 mg/dl. Assume that the distribution is Normal.   PLEASE SHOW YOUR...

Studies have shown children who sleep with a night light are more likely to become nearsighted than those who sleep in a dark room (Quinn, Shin, Maguire, and Stone, 1999 a.         Is it legitimate to conclude that sleeping with a night light causes a higher rate of nearsightedness? Explain. b.         Suppose that a student is asked to identify a confounding variable and responds, “Genetics, because nearsighted parents tend to have nearsighted children.” Explain why this argument is incomplete, and then...

Studies have shown that a certain type bacteria that live in swamps have a magnetized chain of magnetite as part of their internal structure. The magnetized chain acts like a compass to help the bacteria align itself with the Earth's magnetic field. It is found that in the Northern Hemisphere this bacteria has internal magnetite chains that are opposite in polarity to those of similar bacteria in the Southern Hemisphere. Why? Explain.

1. Numerous studies have shown that IQ scores have been increasing, generation by generation, for years. The increase is called the Flynn Effect, and the data indicate that the increase appears to be about 7 points per decade. To demonstrate this phenomenon, a researcher obtains an IQ test that was written in 1980. At the time the test was prepared, it was standardized to produce a population mean of µ = 100 and σ = 15. The researcher administers the...
