Explain why the oligosaccharides of glycoproteins are more complicated to describe than amino acids or nucleotide sequences.
Glycoproteins are the protein molecules which are attached with carbohydrates. Most of the glycoproteins are attached with oligosaccharide (2 to 10 monomer of glucose). Oligosaccharide of glycoproteins are more complicated to describe because of gthe following reasons:
1. Presence of more than one type of glycosidic bonds within an oligosaccharide while peptide bonds universally links amino acids to form proteins.
2. Presence of more than one type of oligosaccharide side chains in a single protein.
3. Lack of unique characteristics of oligosaccharides
4. Chemical similarity of one sugar to another.
