Explain hydraulic lift and how it can improve drought tolerance of plants

Explain hydraulic lift and how it can improve drought tolerance of plants

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution

Hydraulic lift is the process of lifting up of water from the the deeper moist soil to the upper dry soil by the plant root system. Hydraulic lifting causes a redistribution of water and keep the upper soil moist.

Beneficial aspects of Hydraulic lifting

  1. Natural mechanism to overcome the drought
  2. Help to sustain photosynthesis and and other natural physiological processes
  3. Help absorption of minerals
  4. Help in the formation of new roots and strengthen the root system
  5. Help to maintain the rhizosphere microorganisms and increase soil microfauna especially symbiotic and beneficial microorganisms such as Mycorrhiza and Rhizobium
  6. Ensure efficient use of water
  7. Prevent damage to plants caused by desiccation
  8. Prevent wilting of plants in arid soil conditions
  9. Help nutrient recycling
  10. Hydraulic lifting by one plant is beneficial for other small neighboring plants

A hydraulic jack used to lift cars is called a three-ton jack. The large piston is 22 mm in diameter, the small one 6.3 mm. Assume that a force of 3 tons is 3.0 x 104 N. a. What force must be exerted on the small piston to lift the 3-ton weight? b. Most jacks use a lever to reduce the force needed on the small piston. If the resistance arm is 3.0 cm, how long is the effort arm...
