Describe the restriction-modification system in bacteria
The restriction modification system prevents the bacteria from the invading genome of the virus wheninfected with the bacteriophage. There are two types of enzymes one are restriction endonuclease which will cleave the foreign DNA of the phage at the specific site within the DNA and would produce 5 and 3 prime overhangs. The second are the modification enzymes methyltransferase help in differentiating the self and non self DNA and will prevent the cleavage of the self DNA at the same restriction sites. Here the bacteria DNA is methylated and the foreign DNA is unmethylated. This has significantly reduced the phage infection in bacteria due to different restriction systems in bacteria.
