The development of a seed represents another major step in the evolution of plants. What is an advantage of having seeds?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The seed is the characteristic feature of gymnosperm and angiosperm. The seed is responsible for protecting the embryo developing inside it. Because the embryo sac is found in the seeds. The seeds have coat around them which provides protection to them from the external environment such as temperature, salinity etc. It also provides the nutrition to the develipibg embryo via digesting some of its tissue. It also helps in dispersal of seeds from on place to another. This will lead to enhance the fitness of gymnosperm and angiosperm.

Many fossil lyocphytes were tree-sized plants. It is hypothesized that seed plants now outnumber lycophytes because of the adaptive advantage of the seed, but there may also be an adaptive advantage to novel vascular tissue arrangement. What might be advantageous about the arrangement of vascular tissues in the dicot stems compared to the ancestral condition of lyocphytes? Defend your answer.

A gardener plants a mix of seeds for three types of flowers, A, B, and C. In the mix 50% of the seeds are type A, 30% are type B, and the remaining 20% are type C. We know that 80% of the type A seeds will germinate, only 20% of the type B seeds will germinate, and 60% of the type C seeds will germinate. The tree below represents the situation described abo A gardener plants a mix of...
