What does the phrase “liver spares blood glucose” mean when relating to the muscle and brain. Consider each tissue (liver, muscle and brain), the key enzymes regulating each step, hormonal regulation for glucose metabolism in each tissue. Consider glycolysis and gluconeogenesis.

In human body liver perform both storage and production of glucose. Liver can make glucose, when our body requires it. Glycogenolysis is the method used by the liver to convert glycogen into glucose. Gluconeogenesis is the method used by the liver for the production of glucose, during this process glucose is produced from byproducts of fat, aminoacids etc. Glycolysis helps in the production of energy, by turning glucose into pyruvate. Human body mainly stores the glucose in the form of glycogen. When a personis in fasting stage, fast cell in the body produce fattyacid and glycerol, the gkycerol combine with aminoacid to form glucose and it is passed to the blood, hence glucose level in the blood is maintained. Hormones like insulin, glucagen regulate the metabolism of glucose in human body.
