Concept of Standard Deviation was put forward by Karl Pearson. SD is a measure of dispersion. It indicate how spread the data is. For a given set of values with its mean given, SD measures whether the difference of each value from its mean by chance or real.

Distribution of data symmetrically around the mean is called normal distribution. Area under normal curve is equal to one. 68% of the area of normal distrtibution is within 1SD of the mean. or area between one SD on either side of mean will include 68% of values.
