Mutations in the gene encoding PTEN are found in a large number of human cancers. These mutations typically

Increase the levels of PTEN.
Increase the activity of PTEN
Decrease levels of PTEN
A & B.
None of the above.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans. PTEN gene acts as a tumor suppressor gene. A functional copy of PTEN gene encodes PTEN protein that prevents the expression of oncogenes.

However, the mutated PTEN gene does NOT express or produce a functional copy of the PTEN protein. The lack or reduced expression of PTEN protein leads to activation of some oncogenes and onset of cancer.

So, correct option is- C. Decreased levels of PTEN (protein).

# Option A, B. Incorrect. Mutated PTEN gene does not encode a functional PTEN protein. So, mutation in PTEN gene always leads to REDUCED or LOWER levels of PTEN protein. A lower PTEN protein level in turn exhibits lower activity.

A number of different types of mutations in the HBB gene can cause human ?-thalassemia, a disease characterized by various levels of anemia. Many of these mutations occur within introns or in upstream noncoding sequences. Explain why mutations in these regions often lead to severe disease, although they may not directly alter the coding regions of the gene. Select the three correct answers a. mutations in upstream sequences may cause frameshift and disrupt protein production b. introns may become exons...

Any of a large number of different recessive mutations cause profound hereditary deafness. Children homozygous for such mutations are often found in small, isolated communities in which matings tend to be within the group. In these instances, a mutation that orginates in one person can be transmitted to several members of the population in future generations and become homozygous through a marriage between group members who are carriers. A deaf man from one community marries a deaf woman from a...

Human ABO blood type is determined by three alleles (IA, IB, and i) whose gene products modify the H antigen produced by protein activity of an independently assorting H gene. A rare abnormality known as the “Bombay phenotype” is the result of epistatic interaction between the gene for the ABO blood group and the H gene. Individuals with the Bombay phenotype appear to have blood type O based on the inability of both anti-A antibody and anti-B antibody to detect...
