When reporting your vital signs be sure to measure heart rate in beats per minute, respiration rate in breaths per minute and blood pressure as systolic/ diastolic in mmHg (these measurements should look like 120/70). You can do this lab on yourself or on someone else.

#1. Measure three times your respiration rate at rest in breaths per minute and average the results

   Trial 1           Trial 3           Trial 2           Average

#2. Measure your heart rate (in beats per minute) at each of the following pulse points. If you cannot hear or feel the pulse write N/A

Temporal

Carotid

Brachial

Radial

Femoral

Popliteal

Posterior Tibial

Dorsal Pedis

#3. Average all numerical values from question 2. This is your average heart rate.

#4. Which pulse point has the greatest amplitude (is easiest to palpate)?

#5. Which pulse point has the lowest amplitude (is most difficult to palpate)?

#6. Label the diagram below with the peripheral pulse sites.

#7. Measure and record your blood pressure three times. Take the average of the systolic pressures and the average if the diastolic pressures. Report your measurements in the form systolic/diastolic, including the averages. For example if your measurements were 120/70. 110/80 and 115/75 the average would be (120+110+115)/3 = 115 for systolic and (70+80+75)/5 = 75 for diastolic and you would write the average blood pressure 115/75

Trial 3______________________   _______________________average

Answer #1

1) trial a = 13 breath/ min

trial b = 14 breath/ min

trial c = 14 breath/ min

average = 14 breath /min.

2) temporal = 75 beats/min

carotid = 68 beats/min

brachial = 64 beats/min

radial = 70 beats/min

femoral = N/A

popliteal = N/A

posterior tibial = 60 beats/min

dorsal pedis = N/A

3) average heart beats/min = 68 beats/min.

4 and 5) brachial and temporal is easy to palpate while I am unable to palpate from dorsal pedis, femoral and popliteal. most difficult is popliteal (behind knee).

7) blood pressure

trial a = 122/78

trial b = 120/75

trial c = 123/80

average systolic pressure = (122+120+123)/3 = 122

average diastolic pressure = (78+75+80)/3 = 78

average blood pressure = 122/78.

Each time your heart beats, your blood pressure first increases and then decreases as the heart rests between beats. The maximum and minimum blood pressures are called the systolic and diastolicpressures, respectively. Your blood pressure reading is written as systolic/diastolic. A reading of 120/80 is considered normal. A certain person's blood pressure is modeled by the function p(t) = 130 + 25 sin(150πt) where p(t) is the pressure in mmHg (millimeters of mercury), at time t measured in minutes. (a)...

A medical researcher is investigating the effect of drinking coffee on systolic blood pressure. The researcher assumes the average systolic blood pressure is 120 mmHg. For a random sample of 200 patients, the researcher takes two measurements of systolic blood pressure. The first systolic blood pressure measurement is taken during a week when the patients drink no coffee, and the second systolic blood pressure measurement is taken during a week when the patients drink at least two cups of coffee....
