Explain the difference between broad-spectrum and narrow-spectrum antibiotics? Provide an antibiotic as an example of each type and explain their mechanism of action?
Broad spectrum antibiotics are effective against many strains & types of several bacteria that has common structure & functions. Broad spectrum antibiotics are effective against both gram positive & gram negative bacteria. Example- Quinolones : these antibiotics interferes with the mechanism of bacterial DNA replication by blocking DNA gyrase, thereby preventing DNA replication & transcription.
Whereas, Narrow spectrum antibiotics are specific in their target as they are effective against only particular bacterial species, such as maybe gram positive or gram negative. Example- Vanomycin : prevents the bacteria cell wall formation, impacts the cell membrane permeability & RNA synthesis.
hope it helps.
