The body tries to maintain enough blood pressure to keep the most vital organs functioning after a catastrophic loss of over 10 % of total blood volume, then the sympathetic nervous system triggers constriction of blood vessels, which increases blood pressure, increased heart rate and increased heart contractility. This system releases substances known as catecholamines into the bloodstream. These substances cause the blood vessels to constrict and increased the heart rate. At the same time, the arteries provide the brain and vital organs widen to carry the increased blood flow. Blood is distributed to heart and brain.
