What is the type of genetic inheritance of color blindness? Is color blindness more frequent in men or in women? What is the physiological explanation for color blindness?

Answer #1

The type of genetic inheritance of color blindness is X linked recessive inheritance .It is an X linked recessive traot that is more frequenct in men than in women. This is because women have 2X chromosome while men have only 1X chromosome.A single recessive muated gene on X chromosome in males is required for color blindness to be expressed while in females 2 recessive mutated genes one each on the 2X chromosome is required to express the trait. Thus, males who get 1X with recessive mutated gene from mothers will express the trait. The physiological explanation of color blindness could be physical/chemical damage to the eye or the the optic nerve or certain parts of the brain that are involved in formation of process of retrieving color information as a result of which there is decreased ability to see color or differentiate between various colors.

Color Blindness The most common form of color blindness is red–green color blindness. People with this type of color blindness cannot distinguish between green and red. Approximately 8% of all males have red–green color blindness, while only about 0.64% of women have red–green color blindness. In 2000, 49.1% of all Americans were male and 50.9% were female according to the U.S. Census Bureau . (a) What is the probability that a randomly selected American is color blind? b) What is...

Color blindness, or dyschromatopsia, is a form of genetic deficiency in color perception. The condition is much more prevalent among males than females, pointing to a genetic connection with the X chromosome. The frequency of dyschromatopsia in the Caucasian American male population is about 9%. However, it is thought that this proportion might be smaller among males of other ethnicities. We want to estimate the proportion of Asian American males who are color-blind. How large a sample size do we...
