MACROMOLECULES:

State: Importance and logic of experiment 35s and 32p

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Hershey and chase conducted several experients to prove that DNA is genetic material not protein. The logic behind therir experiments using 35S and 32P is, sulphur is present in protein and it is absent in DNA, where as phophorous is present in DNA but absent in protein. So, they developed two different bacteriophases one with sulphur lablled (only protein) and another one is phophorous labelled (only DNA) and they studied the radioacitve activity after generations, as the they detected 32P after generations they conculded that DNA is genetic material.

Select all that apply. In Hershey and Chase's famous experiment, which of the following should they have observed if protein was the genetic material? Ie the part of the cell that stored the instructional code for building more viruses. 1. radioactivity in the capsid when they labeled the viruses with 35S (radioactive sulfur). 2. radioactive sulfur in the supernatant (what the textbook calls the solution) above the pellet. 3. radioactive sulfur in the pellet at the base of the test...
