Which version of the polio vaccine is given today in areas where the polio virus still exists (and is transmitted between people)? Why

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Polio vaccine has two versions - OPV and IPV. Oral poliovirus vaccine and Inactivated poliovirus vaccine.

OPV is given orally while IPV is given as shot in arm or leg.

In countries where polio virus is still there , there is use of IPV alongside OPV. IPV is given with the 3rd dose of OPV. Because OPV has live polio virus , it has tendency to induce polio and it does in some. So IPV is introduced and implemented for the use. IPV cannot replace OPV but used alongside to boost the immunity.
