Ans: Glycolysis in simple terms is the process of breakdown of glucose to produce pyruvate which enters Krebs cycle to generate more ATP. The overall function of the process is to create energy. And it takes place in the cytoplasm of both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.

And about the evolutionary significance it can be assumed that it is a very ancient process where early prokaryotes have been thought and analysed to use glycolysis even before very little to no oxygen being present in the atmosphere. So as to generate energy they must have used this process. As the process can occur even without the presence of oxygen. And glycolysis is a universal process in cellular respiration.
