1.Yes the turtle in order to grow has to molt there shell so it can accomodate the growing body.They shed skutes of there shell.This shedding of skutes piece by piece can rid the turtle from the various parasitic infections the cell may harbour and also relive it from shell rot.
2.The shell of a turtle is a very complex structure and is made of numerous bony elements and also keratinous skutes.The top surface is called carapace and the ventral one is called plastron.The shells are made of bones which are modified and are part of pelvis and ribs etc.
